Each month we profile a different Canadian Food Blogger who is part of the FBC community. This month we meet Salimah, a blogger who inspires everyone to get into the kitchen to not only cook but to make memories with their loved ones.
Name: Salimah Hussein Jinnah
Blog name and URL: This Mom's Kitchen
Where were you born? Karachi, Pakistan
Where are you living now? Toronto, Ontario
Why did you start your blog?
I started this blog to inspire everyone to get into the kitchen to not only cook but to make memories with their loved ones. Cooking doesn’t need to be complicated, therefore I wanted a platform where people can find recipes with simple ingredients and easy methods to get a good meal on the table.
How did you decide on your blog name?
My sister actually came up with the name because she always saw me cooking and experimenting and getting my kids into the kitchen to help out. My kitchen is where you’ll find me , it’s my happy place.
What do you blog about?
I blog about my favorite childhood recipes that I enjoyed eating growing up in Pakistan and East Africa along with many that are inspired by my Canadian roots . I also love sharing helpful kitchen tips and tricks. We could all use those right !?
Is your blog your business, your hobby or something in between?
Right now my blog is in between a hobby and a business. Cooking is definitely my passion! I have a few projects up my sleeve but we’ll keep those a secret for now.
What post on your blog most encapsulates you and why?
That’s a very difficult question but if I had to choose , I would say my Chana Bateta recipe (chickpea potato stew). It’s the one dish that captures not only my childhood but all the different depth of flavors that I love .. the tang , the spiciness , the saltiness and oh that crunch factor when you add chips as the topping . Yum!
Which post do you wish received more love and why?
I wish my Pakistani biryani recipe / post received more love because to be honest it’s one of my favorite dish ever ! It’s a rice dish cooked with aromatic spices and meat and layered in a big pot. It’s made on special occasions and yes it’s a meal that does need more than your few basic steps and a lot of patience but it’s worth every bite !
Which post’s success surprised you and why?
I would say the tiramisu. It’s not a complicated recipe and doesn’t require any cooking time but my kids always ask me to make it for them . I guess what I’m trying to say is that I was hesitant to post it but I’m happy I did because it made me realize what I always believed, that people really do love a simple recipe .
What’s your biggest challenge as a blogger?
I find my biggest challenge is getting out of my comfort zone to take a risk. I find it difficult to reach out to businesses to propose collaborations or to try a different approach to growing my business hobby.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned as a blogger?
I’ve learned that no matter what your skill level or experience is, there’s always someone out there that can and is eager to learn from you. You just have to believe in what you do and what you can offer. Never sell yourself short. There will be people that you encounter that will either criticize or pass judgements but you can’t let that get you down. Shrug it off and move on. You do you!
What has been your biggest success as a blogger so far?
My biggest success is the happiness I feel when I have people messaging me to express their gratitude and share their fond childhood food memories with me that I have provoked with my posts . Success to me is the community at large inviting me into their homes by enjoying and feasting on the recipes I’ve shared . Thank you !
Share a couple of your favourite food blogs to read. Why do you like them?
I really admire and enjoy reading @thefeelgoodfoodie www.thefeelgoodfoodie.net and @themodernnonna www.themodernnonna.com Both of these ladies have single handedly etched a growing thriving business for themselves along with running their own households .
What are you working on next for your blog?
I have a few projects up my sleeve and will reveal in due time. But I will say that you don’t want to miss out on my next adventure .
What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?
I’m a dental hygienist by profession and love what I do . I definitely have texture issues when it comes to certain foods .. ahem .. bananas . I prefer cooking over baking any day !
What makes your blog unique?
It’s easy to navigate, I prefer minimal explanations and lengthy descriptions before my recipe so people can just dive right in rather than having to scroll down to the good part. There are many changes that are yet to come for a more unique experience.
How do you cultivate a sense of community around your blog?
I support my fellow foodie bloggers as much as I can. I love building them up and helping them reach a wider audience . As for my followers , my traditional family recipes not only really brings that niche community together but also inspires other to join in on the fun.
What part of the FBC site do you find most useful? I find the “blogger resources” very helpful . It’s like opening a big treasure chest filled with all these tidbits of knowledge, helpful ideas and most importantly support . Thank you FBC!
